Tutorial: Removing Parts of a Model

Tutorial: Removing Parts of a Model

DAT Texture Wizard gives users the ability to alter the structure of models used in Melee. One common, and relatively easy, use of this feature is removing parts of a model. For this tutorial we are going to be using Captain Falcon’s shoulder pad as an example, as many skins remove this piece.

Step 1. Open DAT Texture Wizard

Step 2. Click File | Open Disc. Then locate and open your Melee iso.

Step 3. Once the disc has loaded, click Characters.

Step 4. Open Captain Falcon’s sub-folder and select the color you want to edit.

Step 5. Find the textures associated with Captain Falcon’s shoulder pad.

For neutral Falcon, those textures are 0x26C60, 0x28C60, and 0x2AC60.

Step 6. In the first of these textures, open the Model tab in DAT Texture Wizard.

Step 7. Check the box that says Disable Polygon (Display List) Rendering. Repeat this process for every texture associated with the applicable model.

Note: In some cases, disabling the rendering of one texture will automatically disable it on textures associated with the same portion of the model. For example, when you disable rendering on 0x28C60, it should automatically disable rendering on 0x2AC60.

Once you are done updating each texture, you should see the following message in DAT Texture Wizard

Step 8. Click CTRL+S or File | Save to write the changes into your ISO.

And that’s it! You have removed Captain Falcon’s shoulder armor. When you boot up Melee, Captain Falcon will look like this:

That’s the basic concept. You can use this method to remove a wide variety of different model parts such as Marth’s crown and cape, Peach’s jewelry, Sheik’s hair, etc. I highly recommend that anyone new to texture hacks visit this comprehensive Smashboards thread for more information.
